Dehradun: In a meeting held on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the rules for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

“We Have Fulfilled Our Promise”: CM Dhami
Speaking to the media after the cabinet meeting, CM Dhami said, “We have fulfilled the promise we made. When we went to the public during the 2022 Assembly elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we promised that the first step after forming a BJP government in the state would be the implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand.”
Uttarakhand Becomes the First State in the Country to Implement UCC
He further added that after the government was formed, the UCC bill was introduced. A drafting committee prepared its framework, which was then passed in the Assembly. Following the President’s approval, it became law. The training process for implementation is now nearly complete. With the Cabinet’s approval of the rules today, the state is set to implement the UCC after reviewing all aspects.
CM Dhami affirmed that Uttarakhand will be the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code.
Equal Rights for All Citizens Across Religions and Communities
The implementation of the UCC will establish a common civil law for all citizens in Uttarakhand, regardless of religion, caste, or community. The law ensures equal rights for everyone in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
Chief Minister Dhami described the approval of the rules as a significant step towards the development and social justice of the state.
It is noteworthy that the UCC Bill was first introduced in a special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly on 6 February 2024, and was passed by a large majority on 7 February 2024. Later, President Droupadi Murmu signed the bill on 13 March 2024, giving it the status of law.
