Devastation in Uttarakhand: Prime Minister Modi to Visit Affected Areas Soon, Will Assess the Damage

DEHRADUN: Heavy rains and landslides during this monsoon season have caused massive devastation in Uttarakhand. To assess the extensive damage from the disaster and review the ongoing relief operations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi may soon visit the disaster-affected regions of the state. However, an official date or schedule for his visit has not yet been announced.

According to sources, the Prime Minister’s visit is being planned in light of the severity of the disaster and the special financial assistance requested by the state government from the Centre. During his tour, he is likely to conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas and may also carry out on-ground inspections at some locations to directly assess the damage. It is also expected that PM Modi will meet with the disaster victims to offer his condolences.

Thousands of Crores in Losses

This year’s monsoon rains have broken several past records in the state, leading to a significant loss of life and property, particularly in districts like Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, and Chamoli. Incidents of cloudbursts and landslides across the state have caused widespread destruction, resulting in numerous fatalities and leaving hundreds of people homeless. Thousands of kilometers of roads, bridges, and government buildings have been damaged, and there has also been extensive harm to agricultural land.

Central Team Already Assessing Damage

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s potential visit, the central government has already dispatched an inter-ministerial team to Uttarakhand to assess the damage. This team is visiting the most affected districts and will submit a detailed report to the Centre. Based on this report, the central government will provide financial assistance to the state.

The state government has requested a special relief package of ₹5,702.15 crore from the Centre to compensate for the disaster-related losses. The Prime Minister’s visit is expected to significantly expedite the relief and reconstruction efforts in the region.
