Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Devotion, Grandeur, and a Celestial Warning

Dehradun – Devotees across India are gearing up to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, one of Hinduism’s most cherished festivals, with great fervor and grandeur on August 27, 2025.The ten-day festival, which marks the birth anniversary of the elephant-headed deity Lord Ganesha, will culminate with Ganesh Visarjan on September 6, 2025.While the festival is celebrated nationwide, the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are epicenters of the grandest celebrations.

The auspicious period for welcoming and worshiping Lord Ganesha begins with the Chaturthi Tithi on August 26, 2025, at 01:54 PM, and concludes on August 27, 2025, at 03:44 PM.The most sacred time for performing the main puja, the Madhyahna Ganesha Puja Muhurat, is on August 27, from 11:05 AM to 01:40 PM.

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav, holds immense significance for Hindus.Lord Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles and the bestower of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. The festival is a time for new beginnings, and devotees bring home beautifully crafted idols of the deity, worshiping him with dedication for up to eleven days.

The festival’s transformation into a grand public event is credited to the freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak, who in 1893 used it as a way to unite people against British rule. Today, it continues to foster community spirit, with elaborate pandals (temporary shelters) being set up, and cultural events being organized.

A unique and crucial aspect of the festival is the proscription against sighting the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. According to mythology, the moon god once mocked Lord Ganesha, who in turn cursed him. It is believed that anyone who sees the moon during the Chaturthi Tithi will face “Mithya Dosha” – a curse of being falsely accused of theft or wrongdoing. This belief is tied to a legend where Lord Krishna himself was wrongly accused of stealing the Syamantaka jewel after seeing the moon on this day.

To avoid this curse, devotees are advised not to look at the moon during the following times:

August 26, 2025: 01:54 PM to 08:29 PM

August 27, 2025: 09:28 AM to 08:57 PM

If one accidentally sights the moon, it is recommended to listen to or recite the story of the Syamantaka jewel to nullify the curse.

The festival concludes with Anant Chaturdashi on September 6, when the idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed in a body of water, a ritual known as Ganesh Visarjan. This is done amidst vibrant street processions, with devotees chanting and dancing, bidding farewell to the deity with the hope of his return the following year.
